Don’t Get Distracted - Big Problems Require Big Solutions, not Simple Ones
To believe we can solve the teen mental health crisis by forcing kids off social media and doing nothing about all these other things is foolish.
Of course, one of the telltale signs of depression and unhealthy responses to trauma, like abuse, is overly black-and-white thinking. Going to extremes, if you will. So, it's easy for many of us to fall into these toxic traps. It's easy to think that we should feel shame about what happened to us or that we can somehow rid ourselves of that shame and anger by simply refusing to do anything but be positive. But neither one of these is real healing. Real healing, like real emotions and real people, is messier than that.
Sharing - Stigma is Killing Us
There’s simply no way you don’t know people struggling right now. Whether you want to consider the levels of anxiety and depression a disorder or a natural reaction to the state of the world today, we would all do well with more compassion and grace.
A lot more. People are dying without it.
Quick Thought #9 - Trauma Recovery and Connection
I've often talked about the importance of connection. It's been mentioned in regard to suicide prevention, depression treatment, child trauma recovery, and just about everywhere else that we talk about mental health issues and abuse. There's a reason for that. It's much easier to feel hopeful about ourselves and the future when we know we're not alone.
Read that again. “Everybody assumes that other people are far more observant than they really are.”
Now, think about how much time we spend worrying about how we appear to other people who are not as observant as we think they are.
Sometimes We Just Need Someone to Just Listen
It's not therapy, and it won't fix everything, but as he says, "When you listen to someone, you let them know I value you".
Question for you: how will you show someone you value them today?
